About the artist
Sally Ishizawa is a California-based contemporary oil painter whose work explores the emotional connections between memory, presence, and the beings we hold closest to our hearts. Through intimate portraiture and expressive realism, Ishizawa creates paintings that honor the quiet moments, unique personalities, and stories that make each subject unforgettable.
With a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from California State University, Long Beach, Ishizawa developed a deep appreciation for traditional painting techniques while continuing to explore the emotional possibilities of contemporary realism. Her work is inspired by the atmosphere and storytelling found in artists such as Edward Hopper and the delicate, expressive approach of contemporary painters like Tina Figarelli. Drawing from light, color, and human connection, she creates pieces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
Much of Ishizawa’s current practice centers around animal portraiture, particularly the profound bond between people and their pets. She views each painting as more than a representation — it is a preservation of companionship, personality, and memory. Through careful observation and layered oil techniques, she strives to capture the spirit behind each subject, creating heirloom works meant to be cherished for generations.
